Sign of the (Lap) Times
Sign of the (Lap) Times: Dallas
By Billy Ursic
 RXR Protect

Designed by Honda Red Bull’s Ivan Tedesco (and based entirely on San Diego ’04), the Dallas track that was created for last Saturday night’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross provided plenty of lines and tight racing in both classes, with the exception of the leaders, who both inched away from second-place. The lap times hovered in the low- to mid 50-second range, and surprisingly, the winner didn’t register the fastest time in one of the classes.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto is showing improvement each week, and he rode 15 flawless laps in Dallas, his fastest coming on lap four when he logged a time of 53.048—the top time in the class. The rider who he’s chasing for the Eastern Regional Lites championship, Trey Canard, clocked the second-fastest time with a 53.926, coming on lap 14 after a heroic charge through the field following an early crash.

Canard’s teammate Josh Grant was next with a 54.131, coming on lap two, while RV’s teammate Branden Jesseman followed that with a 54.954. Rounding out the top five was MDK KTM’s Martin Davalos (55.089), who finished on the podium for the third time this season. Check out the rest of the Lites lap times below:

Biggest surprise: Billy Payne, back to racing after a few years away from the sport, is putting in solid finishes and top ten lap times each week. Hopefully he gains some more support and joins the Lites riders in the AMA Toyota Motocross Championships.

For the first time in a while, San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed did not have the fastest lap time in the main event; but he was darn close. It was Torco Racing Fuels Honda’s Kevin Windham clocking the fastest time of the night (52.333), coming on lap six. Reed’s best lap was only three thousandths off of K-Dub (52.336), and his best lap came two laps earlier. But Reed was out front and Windham was trying to fight through traffic. Rounding out the top five was Davi Millsaps, Tim Ferry and runner-up finisher Josh Hill, who all had times down in the 52-second range.

Biggest surprise
: Actually, it’s not even really a surprise any more, as JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha’s Charles (Josh) Summey is becoming a regular top-ten finisher. He tied his season-best finish again in Dallas, as he finished seventh for the third time this season—with Coach Joe Gibbs on hand to watch the team. Josh’s lap time was the seventh fastest, too, and he’s only three-tenths off of Honda Red Bull Racing’s Andrew Short’s best lap time.
